100% success in supporting GPs into a career in Rural General Practice
The Isle of Arran has hosted a highly successful GP Rural Fellowship Programme since 2002. The Arran GP fellowship offers qualified GPs a year of supported training in rural practice.
The unique mix of care offered on Arran provides an excellent environment for training in rural practice. You will be supported by and become a core part of an experienced team of clinicians delivering a wide spectrum of rural health care across the island. In addition to core general practice. there is a busy community hospital where we provide A&E, acute admissions, step-down rehabilitation and stabilisation & transfer of critically ill patients. The range of practice on the island offers a broad mix of learning opportunities.
You will be able to experience the satisfaction of working in a small community and learn about areas dispensing, working in remote branch surgeries and the generalist skills needed on an island. This is an exciting time to join the wider team on Arran as we are progressing well with the integration of health and social care teams, and the development of more joined-up care.

Duties and Renumeration
Fellows work the same ‘full time’ equivalent of eight sessions per week. This means that if you have on-call (see below), you can have the next day off to rejuvenate. GP Fellows are expected to take an equitable share of the OOH rota, which at present is around 1:8.
Out of Hours shifts are paid separately to the Fellowship salary, in line with the rate for other GPs providing OOH on Arran.
We have over twenty years’ experience of running GP Fellowships, and know what works to ensure that Fellows feel supported and enabled to make the year a success. We also recognise that every Fellow has different expectations and objectives, and being part of a wider practice team means that there is usually no difficulty in getting the time off required to attend training and other experience off-island. There are five ferries a day (double that during spring/summer) and we are only minutes 2 hours from the ferry queue to Glasgow – by public transport or car.
All the previous Arran GP Fellows are happy to be contacted for advice or an informal chat – and you can make initial contact with Dr Isla Barrow or Dr Liz Guthrie – contact details are in the information pack which can be downloaded below. We would welcome anyone who would like to make a visit and this can be accommodated at the weekends as well as during the week.
If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Isla Barrow or Liz Guthrie directly.
